The digestive system is made up of hollow organs designed to break down and absorb food. Food enters the mouth, moves through the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, and out the anus.
Along the way, the food is physically and chemically broken down into smaller, managable pieces. The body cannot absorb food whole. It must be broken into molecules that the small intestines can absorb into the blood stream. |
